Poliomyelitis Research Foundation Bursaries 2021-2022

The Poliomyelitis Research Foundation (PRF) provides 5 Postgraduate students with financial assistance every year. This takes the form of the PRF Bursary Programme. The Bursaries are aimed at financially needy students, with preference given to South African citizens, boasting an academic history of at least 60%.

The Poliomyelitis Research Foundation Bursary Programme will provide financial support to students studying their Honours, Masters or Doctorate Postgraduate BSc Degrees.

The Poliomyelitis Research Foundation (PRF) is an NPO that was started by the Scientific Advisory Panel in the 1940s and is run by senior virologists and members of the Scientific Advisory Panel.

The PRF specializes in medical virology research and development, with a historical distribution of more than R144 000 000 in research funds. The PRF distributes bursaries to needy students as well as running a virology-based training and conference center.  

Closing Date of the Bursary

Please note that there are two closing dates for the Poliomyelitis Research Foundation Bursary Programme. These are the 28th of February 2021 and the 15th of September 2021.

Applications received after the closing date will not be considered for the Poliomyelitis Research Foundation Bursary Programme.  

Latest Bursaries in South Africa

Kindly note that prospective applicants need to satisfy all the requirements of the Poliomyelitis Research Foundation Bursary in order to be considered for the Programme:

  • Applications are open to South African Citizens and Permanent Residents ONLY.
  • Applicants should be studying one of the above mentioned Postgraduate Degrees.
  • Applicants should be studying their Postgraduate Degree on a full-time basis.
  • Applications are open to students with an academic history average of at least 60%.
  • Bursary preference will be given to students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.

 The applications will be evaluated according to stringent research project criteria:

  • The research project should be focused on laboratory virus research.
  • The research project should be relevant to South African diseases.
  • The research project should be achievable.
  • The research project should be reasonably priced.
  • The research project should yield an intervention that is applicable in South Africa.

Please note that failure to adhere to the requirements of the PRF – Poliomyelitis Research Foundation Bursary Programme will result in a rejected application.

Bursary Coverage

Please note that financial support levels are dependent on the Degree being pursued by the prospective applicant:

  • Hons – 1 year of financial support.
  • MSc – 2 years of financial support.
  • PhD – 3 years of financial support.

The Poliomyelitis Research Foundation Bursary Programme will be used to cover the expenses related to the successful applicant’s research project.

Prospective applicants should find and complete the relevant PRF Bursary document:

The following supporting documentation should be attached to the applicant’s application form:

  • The applicant should attach a certified copy of their ID certificate.
  • The applicant should attach a certified copy of their proof of residence.
  • The applicant should attach proof of their full academic history.
  • The applicant should attach a full summary of their research project.

Beneficiaries may apply for Bursary renewal. The renewed application should contain project results, as well as published academic papers.
