SA-GER Centre for Development Research Scholarships 2022 – 2023

Any student looking to earn a Master’s Degree in a field that can contribute toward the development of social, economic, and political fields may just have found the funding program they’ve been looking for.

The South African German Centre for Development Research is now inviting students to apply for its scholarship program.

This is a great opportunity for anyone interested to take their studies one step further.

Below is a guide we’ve provided on exactly how to do that and how this scholarship works.

Closing Date

Applications for the SA-GER Centre for Development Research Scholarship program will be closing on 20 June 2022.

This applies to applicants for the Public Administration and Development Studies programs.

Applicants for the Development Management program have until 31 December 2021 to apply.

Please make sure that your application is submitted by then along with all requested support documents.

Failure to do so will result in your application not being accepted by the scholarship provider.

What is This Scholarship About?

The SA-GER Centre for Development Research is inviting qualified students to apply for its scholarship program.

These students need to be pursuing a Master’s Degree in the following fields:

  • Public Administration
  • Development Studies
  • Development Management

Who Can Apply

This scholarship is open to all students pursuing a Master’s Degree in the field listed above.

However, they will still need to meet the following criteria set by the scholarship provider to be considered ideal applicants:

For MA in Public Administration and Development Studies applicants:

  • Applicants are expected to thoroughly review the specific admission requirements as well as application procedures of their desired program.
  • Applicants must be a resident of any Sub-Saharan country.
  • Applicants must have attained nothing lower than 70% in the most recently completed degree (within the last six years).
  • An applicant’s previous study experience must be relevant to Public Administration or Development Studies and completed at a well-known university in their country.
  • South African applicants will need to possess an honors qualification to apply.
  • Applicants need to demonstrate proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Applicants should have work or voluntary experience in their field of interest.
  • Applicants must be available for full-time study.

For MA in Development Management applicants:

  • Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree qualification in social science, political science, geography, economics, law, or any other qualification relevant to development program evaluation and planning.
  • Applicants must have a certified background in, or relevant to development programs/projects management for over one month, or teaching and research obtained from an institution of higher learning.
  • Applicants need a minimum TOEFL proficiency of 79-180 iBT or 213 CBT, or IELTS  Band 6.0

What Does This Scholarship Cover?

This scholarship will assist successful candidates with a 650 Euro monthly allowance, and provide financial cover for tuition and registration fees.

How To Apply

Applications for this scholarship are fairly easy.

You will also need to have the following documents with you:

For MA in Public Administration and Development Studies applicant:

  • A motivational letter.
  • A certified copy of your valid passport.
  • An updated CV showing work history as an employee or intern (Be sure to use a Europass CV form).
  • A certified copy of academic records from the most recent university attended.
  • A certified copy of academic certificates ( if graduation comes after the application deadline, submit a letter from concerned authorities confirming the applicant’s graduation by the end of 2021).
  • Academic reference, as well as a professional reference (if applicable). Referees may send their reference separately with the applicant’s name to info.uwc@cdr-sa.org 
  • A one-page report paper (in e-form) talking about any of the three topics below
    • Write critical notes on how inequality can be measured. What do you think are the root causes of inequality in your country?
    • What do you see as the possibilities for a successful Developmental State model in any African country of your choice?
    • What are the primary causes of migration and how can it be resolved?

Please be aware: All essay submissions will be checked for plagiarism and any application found to contain plagiarized content will not be accepted.

Shortlisted applicants will receive an interview invitation which will take place six to eight weeks after the application deadline.

Interviews will be done either on-site, over the phone, or via Skype.

For MA in Development Management applicants:

  • A motivational letter.
  • An updated CV using a Europass template. Access and fill out the form here.
  • Submit the following certificates:
    • University certificates indicating academic title received, as well as single marks achieved (full academic transcript).
    • Language certificates that indicate a level of English (and German, if applicable) proficiency at the time of application.
  • Proof of current or previous employment or other relevant work experience.
  • Passport photo.
  • A certified copy of an ID card or passport.
  • Two recommendation letters (professional and academic).
