SAAFoST Brian Koeppen Memorial Scholarship 2022 – 2023

The scholarship will provide financial assistance to cater to students in various universities around the country that are pursuing a postgraduate qualification in food science and food technology-related fields.

Applications for the SAAFoST Brian Koeppen Memorial Scholarship will be closing on 18 April 2022.

Please make sure that your application is submitted by then along with all requested support documents.

Failure to do so will result in your application not being accepted by the organization.

What is This Scholarship?

The SAAFoST Brian Koeppen is available for studies on a Master’s Degree or Doctoral level in Food Science and Food Technology.

The scholarship will be active for the 2022 academic year and will cover study courses throughout the most notable South African universities.

The scholarship was founded to commemorate the memory and contributions of the late Professor B H Koeppen.

He was the Head of the Department of Food Science at Stellenbosch University.

The SAAFoST is focused on the progressive research on food science and technology by conducting extensive scientific research and further increasing its knowledge base.

The organization is a non-profit and is mainly operated by volunteers throughout the country.

The scholarship will cater to the following departments in the following institutions:

Departments of Food Science: University of Pretoria, Stellenbosch, Venda, and Free State.

Departments of Food Technology: Durban University of Technology, Tshwane University of Technology, University of Johannesburg, and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.

Who Can Apply

The SAAFoST Brain Koeppen Memorial Scholarship is open to postgraduate students enrolled in Food Science and Food Technology-related fields.

However, they will still need to meet the following requirements set by the organization:

  • Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents of the country.
  • Applicants need to have been a member of SAAFoST for at least 1 year before applying for the scholarship.
  • Applicants need to be registered with one of the universities mentioned above in a postgraduate program for at least 1 year before they can be nominated for the scholarship.

What Does This Scholarship Cover?

The scholarship will be awarded to 2 candidates. One for a Master’s Degree and the other for Doctorate.

Each will be valued at R35,000 per year which will be used for study-related fees.

If a candidate is already enrolled in a bursary program, then the scholarship funding will go to other academic functions if approved by the SAAFoST organization.

How To Apply

Students cannot apply for this scholarship on their own.

They will need to be nominated by their Department Head which will be limited to a single candidate who is registered for one of the qualifications listed above.

Applications can only be approved and submitted by the tertiary institution.

You will need to contact your Department Head and request they nominate you for this scholarship.

  • Proof of SAAFoST membership.
  • Certified copy of your ID or permanent residence.
  • Proof of registration to one of the universities listed above.
  • Certified copy of your full academic record.
  • A project proposal of research that needs to be done.
  • An approved progress report of the research work you have done during the 2021 academic year.
  • Proof of any other bursary or financial scheme enrollment.
