The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Sasol Foundation jointly offer bursaries for the 2026 academic year. The scheme aims to develop scarce skills in engineering and science by supporting South African students who need financial assistance.
Bursary sponsor – CSIR & Sasol Foundation
The CSIR is South Africa’s national research organisation, while the Sasol Foundation is the corporate social investment arm of energy company Sasol. Together they support talented students to build a pipeline of scientists and engineers.
What is this bursary program?
The bursary covers the full cost of study, including registration and tuition fees, textbooks, accommodation, living allowances and a laptop allowance.
The recipients will also benefit from excellence awards, structured work placement or vacation work, interview training, mentorship and psychosocial support, amongst others.
Who can apply
Grade 12 learners:
- Must be an SA citizen
- Must enroll at a South African public university full time for the degree chosen
- English (Level 5)
- Mathematics and Physical Science (Level 6)
Current university students:
- Must be an SA citizen
- Passed all registered courses for the period of study
Eligible fields of study
Engineering disciplines such as:
Mechatronic, Computer, Electronic, Chemical, Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, Material Flow Analysis and Process Engineering/Life Cycle Assessment.
Bursaries are also offered for the following: Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, Genetics/Cell Biology

Applications must be completed online via the CSIR or Sasol Foundation bursary portal. Applicants upload their ID, latest academic results and proof of university acceptance. Only complete applications submitted by the deadline will be considered.
