The Breede Valley Municipality in the Western Cape is inviting applications for its Mayoral Bursary Programme 2026. The bursary provides financial support to deserving students from Rawsonville, Worcester, De Doorns and Touwsrivier who want to pursue tertiary studies, preferably in fields linked to local government.

What the bursary covers
The Mayoral Bursary fund is intended as a contribution towards your total study costs. The exact value is confirmed each year in the municipal budget, but typically covers:
- Registration fees at a recognised South African public university or TVET college.
- A portion of tuition fees, depending on available funds and the number of successful applicants.
- Payments made directly to the institution on behalf of the student.
The bursary does not usually cover accommodation, transport, living expenses or historic student debt.
Preferred fields of study
Priority is given to fields of study that support the work of local government, for example:
- Public Administration and Governance
- Financial Management, Accounting and Auditing
- Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering
- Town and Regional Planning
- Environmental Management
- Human Resources Management
- Information Technology and related fields
- Other qualifications that may benefit municipal service delivery.
Who can apply? (Eligibility checklist)
- You are a South African citizen.
- You live within the Breede Valley Municipality (Rawsonville, Worcester, De Doorns or Touwsrivier).
- You are currently in Matric or have already completed Matric.
- You achieved at least around 50% overall in your latest results.
- You have been accepted, or have applied, to study at a recognised South African public tertiary institution.
- Your field of study is preferably related to local government or supports municipal service delivery.
- You are not receiving another full bursary (e.g. NSFAS covering all costs).
Documents you’ll need
- Completed and signed Breede Valley Mayoral Bursary application form (latest version).
- Certified copy of your South African ID.
- Certified copy of your Matric certificate or latest school results.
- Proof of residence within the Breede Valley Municipality (e.g. municipal account or affidavit).
- Proof of household income (payslips, bank statements or affidavits for unemployed guardians).
- Proof of application or acceptance at a tertiary institution.
- Motivational letter explaining your background, financial need and study goals.
- Any additional documents requested in the official advert or application form.
How to apply
- Download the official Mayoral Bursary advert, Annexure A (conditions) and application form from the Breede Valley Municipality website or collect a hard copy from municipal offices.
- Read all the conditions carefully to make sure you qualify.
- Complete the application form in full and sign where required.
- Attach all the required supporting documents.
- Submit your application using the method indicated in the advert (hand delivery, email or post) on or before 8 December 2025 – late applications are not accepted.
After you submit
Applications are assessed against academic potential, financial need, field of study and residency criteria. Only shortlisted candidates are usually contacted. If you are successful, you will be required to sign a bursary agreement with the municipality.
