The City of Johannesburg Bursary provides an opportunity for youth residing within Johannesburg to access higher education. Through this programme, the City aims to invest in developing future leaders by funding students in key fields that contribute to community development and service delivery. For the 2026 academic year, the City is offering 200 bursaries to deserving South African youth pursuing full-time undergraduate studies.
The Bursary Sponsor
The bursary is offered by the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, one of South Africa’s largest local government structures. The City is committed to promoting education, skills development, and capacity building among residents of Johannesburg through its youth empowerment initiatives.
What Is This Bursary Program?
The City of Johannesburg Bursary supports full-time undergraduate studies at accredited South African tertiary institutions. The bursary is available for qualifications of no less than one year and is renewable annually based on academic performance.
The bursary covers:
- Tuition and registration fees
- Prescribed books and/or study material
- Funding is limited to R40 000 per academic year

- International Relations and Protocol
- Built Environment (Architecture, Construction, Urban and Regional Planning, Quantity Surveying)
- Legal Studies
- Commerce
- Logistics
- Community Services
- Marketing
- Emergency Management Services
- Municipal Governance (Monitoring and Evaluation)
- Engineering (All Fields)
- Real Estate (Property Management, Property Valuation)
- Health (All Fields)
- Geo Information Science (GIS)
- Finance (Accounting, Auditing, Small Business Management, Supply Chain Management, Treasury, Economics)
- Information Technology and Management (All Fields)
Who Can Apply
To qualify, applicants must:
- Be South African citizens permanently residing in Johannesburg
- Be youth community members within the City of Johannesburg
- Have completed Matric or be currently in Matric
- Be accepted or enrolled at an accredited South African tertiary institution
- Demonstrate academic merit
- Meet the selection criteria based on academic performance
- Not be applying for postgraduate studies (the bursary excludes postgraduate qualifications)
