Fields of study
The approved fields differ by study level. They include selected areas in engineering, computer science, information systems, data science, geology, oceanography, health and biomedical sciences, biotechnology, environmental science, ecology, architecture and related CSIR priority disciplines. Eligibility
- Be a South African citizen and plan to study full-time at a South African public university in 2027.
- Meet the academic requirements for the relevant study level and field.
- Current university students must have passed all registered courses for the completed study period.
- Postgraduate applicants must demonstrate a strong academic record and the capacity to conduct research.

What it covers
Support varies by study level. CSIR lists registration and tuition fees, books, accommodation, living allowances and a once-off laptop allowance for undergraduate and Honours recipients. Master’s and doctoral support includes registration, tuition, living allowances and a once-off laptop allowance. Additional research-related support may be available to qualifying postgraduate recipients. Funding is subject to performance and successful bursars have a work-back obligation.
