About the programme
Eskom’s bursary intake supports students developing skills relevant to the electricity and energy sector. Funding is available through engineering degree, engineering diploma and non-technical degree categories.
What the bursary covers

Eligibility requirements
Applicants must be South African citizens and must not already hold another bursary. School-leaver routes are for current matric learners or applicants who matriculated in 2025 and will begin their first year in 2027. Current-student routes require active enrolment at a recognised public tertiary institution.
Engineering degree: Grade 12
English at Level 4; Pure Mathematics and Physical Science at Level 5. BEng/BSc routes only; BEngTech is excluded from this category.
Engineering degree: current students
First- or second-year degree students need an aggregate of at least 60%, with no outstanding subjects carried over.
Engineering diploma: Grade 12
English, Pure Mathematics and Physical Science at Level 4. This category also includes BEngTech in Electrical or Industrial Engineering. Advanced Diplomas are excluded.
Engineering diploma: current students
First- and second-year diploma students, plus third-year BEngTech Electrical or Industrial students, may apply. An aggregate of at least 50% and no outstanding subjects carried over are required. Advanced Diplomas are excluded.
Non-technical degree: Grade 12
Meet the admission requirements for your chosen eligible bachelor’s degree at a recognised public university. Diplomas do not qualify under this category.
Non-technical degree: current students
First- or second-year degree students need an aggregate of at least 60%, with no outstanding subjects carried over. Diplomas are excluded.
Fields of study
Engineering degrees: Industrial, Electrical (heavy or light current), Electrical and Computer, Electronic, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Civil, Data, Chemical, Electromechanical, Metallurgy, Software, Measurement Control and Instrumentation, and Renewable Energy Engineering.
Engineering diplomas: Chemical, Civil, Data, Electrical (heavy or light current), Mechanical, and Measurement Control and Instrumentation. The diploma application category also lists BEngTech in Electrical and Industrial Engineering.
Non-technical degrees: The eligible fields include science, computing, accounting, economics, law, human resources, logistics, surveying, management, nursing and radiology. Despite its name, this category includes scientific and technical subjects. Check the complete qualification list in your selected advert before applying.
Documents to prepare
- School-leavers: Grade 11 final results or a Grade 12 certificate, as applicable, and conditional institutional acceptance if available.
- Current students: a full academic record.
- A CV and the personal information requested when registering an Eskom Careers profile.
- Any additional supporting documents requested in the online application.
Closing date and selection
Submit your application by 22 September 2026. Final selection depends on the applicable 2026 academic results, and psychometric assessment may be required. Eskom advises applicants who receive no response within 28 days after the deadline to regard their application as unsuccessful.
Common application mistakes
- Using a school-leaver form when already studying at university.
- Applying for BEngTech through the engineering degree route instead of the applicable diploma category.
- Submitting an incomplete academic record or selecting an unsupported qualification.
