South African Association of Botanists (SAAB) Scholarship 2023-2024

If you are a student who wants to pursue a career and qualification in botanical sciences, then this scholarship may just be what you are looking for.

The South African Association of Botanists is providing the opportunity for eager students to apply for their scholarship program.

The association’s role and responsibility are to promote and maintain the Botany industry across as many sectors as possible.

Its members operate in universities, research, and academic institutions across the country. Below is a breakdown of the scholarship that explains how it operates and what it expects from applicants.

Closing Date

This scholarship will close on 28 February 2022. Please make sure to submit your application along with all support documents in PDF form before this date.

Late applications will not be accepted by the SAAB and will be disqualified from their selection.

What Is The SAAB Scholarship Program?

This scholarship program will provide financial assistance by offering selected candidates various bursaries.

SAAB’s goal is to ensure that the botanical sciences remain enriched with young and eager minds who can bring new ideas and innovations to the profession.

Who Can Apply?

The SAAB scholarship program caters to applicants studying toward their Honours or 4th year of study and MSc studies. Applicants will need to meet the following requirements in order to be considered for selection:

  • Applicants must live in one of the SADC countries (South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Swaziland, Malawi, Lesotho, Angola, Tanzania, Mauritius, Comoros, Democratic Rebuplic of Congo, Seychelles, Mozambique, Madagascar.)
  • Applicants in a Botanical Sciences related field.
  • Applicants must have graduated with an overall average of 70% at the minimum.
  • Applicants must be studying at a recognized South African tertiary institution.
  • Applicants need to be members of the SAAB.
  • Applicants need to have a supervisor that is a member of the SAAB.
  • MSc students must be in their first year of study and need to have graduated with a BSc Honours degree with a minimum score of 70%.

What Does The SAAB Scholarship Program Cover?

This scholarship will award 3 bursaries for Honours or 4th-year students at the value of R12,000 for 1 academic year.

They will also receive a complimentary 1-year SAAB membership. A single bursary will be awarded to an MSc applicant at the value of R40,000.

The candidate will receive half the amount in their first year, and the second half in the following year, if the candidate’s results are satisfactory in the first year. The candidate of this bursary will also receive a complimentary membership to the SAAB for 2 years.

How To Apply

Applying for the SAAB Scholarship program is easy. All you need to do is download and complete the application form here. You will also need to submit the following support documents:

  • A certified copy of your ID
  • Certified copies of your academic records
  • An updated CV with at least 2 references
  • A motivational letter that supports why you would be an ideal candidate for this scholarship program
  • A motivational letter from a supervisor for the same reason
