The Cheadle Thompson & Haysom Inc. Attorneys (CTH) founded the Bheki Mlangeni Memorial Scholarship (BMMS) in memory of Bhekisizwe Godfrey Mlangeni who was assassinated in 1991.
He was a respected colleague who played an important role in challenging the legal order during the Apartheid era aspiring towards a committed democratic future.
He came from a poor working class background and after he graduated from Wits University in 1989, he joined CTH as a lawyer, an activist, and a representative for his community.
CTH was established in 1979 by a group of legal academics and has since grown becoming one of the leading law firms in South Africa with offices located in Cape Town and Johannesburg and consists of a growing number of professionally trained lawyers.
The firm established the Scholarship to remember where the people came from, where they drew their strengths from, the struggles they faced that needed to be addressed in order to maintain their founding principles.
In the early 1990s the firm began to expand from being specialists in Human Rights and Labour Law to Constitutional and Public Administration, Media, Telecommunications and Commercial Law.
Over time facing many challenges and changes during this period, CTH decided to create the Scholarship to encourage law students to complete their studies and to measure the quality of legal academics, remembering Bheki Mlangeni’s sacrifice and the impact his life and death had on the firm and the past of a different era.
Closing date of the bursary
