About the Gert-Johan Coetzee Bursaries

The goal of these bursaries is to develop the South African fashion industry to allow students to begin a lucrative career in it. Candidates will study for a total of 3 years with the North West School of Design and will be required to enroll in 2 internship programs each year during their holidays at the Gert-Johan Coetzee studios. These bursary programs are looking for applicants who are hard-working, dedicated and have a great interest in fashion.

Who Can Apply

Matriculants who are interested in studying fashion are welcome to apply for these bursary programs. The North West School of Design has set a few requirements that applicants must meet:

  • Applicants must be South African citizens
  • Applicants must be fluent and write in English
  • Applicants must have completed matric or are currently in their matric year.

What Do These Bursaries Cover?

The Gert-Johan Bursaries are split into 2 separate programs:

The Fashion Design Bursary
This bursary is valued at R182,000 and will provide financial cover for 3 years of tuition fees with the North West School of Design, a Bernette Chicago 5 sewing machine, Bernina SA sponsorship, and an Aspire A315-51 15 laptop. Please be aware that this bursary does not cover transport, accommodation, or meals.

The Fashion Communication Bursary
This bursary is valued at R170,000 and will provide financial cover for 3 years of tuition fees with the North West School of Design and an Aspire A315-51 15 laptop. Please be aware that this bursary does not cover transport, accommodation, or meals.

Once applications have been submitted, the selection process will begin. Semi-finalists will be selected and contacted telephonically by 19 October 2021. They will be required to complete 2 assignments. The last 2 finalists will be awarded the bursaries and will be notified by the North West School of Design by 6 November 2021.

Candidates will begin their studies at the beginning of the 2022 academic year.

Each bursary requires certain supporting documents and other requested items. Please ensure that these are included with your application to the related bursary program.

The Fashion Design Bursary

  • A certified copy of your ID
  • A certified copy of your latest matric results
  • A certified copy of your matric certificate
  • 2 fashion designs based on any style tribe fashion sketches in A4 size, with full color, and a maximum of 5MB each.
  • A mood board that shows the various subcultures and designs that influenced your work with a maximum of 5MB.

The Fashion Communication Bursary

  • A certified copy of your ID
  • A certified copy of your latest matric results
  • A certified copy of your matric certificate
  • A motivational essay on why you should be awarded the bursary and how you can make an impact on the South African fashion industry with a maximum of 200 words.
