Collins Chabane Local Municipality invites eligible students from indigent households within the municipal area to apply for the Mayoral Bursary Fund for the 2026 academic year. The bursary supports studies at recognised tertiary institutions, with funding paid directly to the institution (except in respect of private accommodation, which may be paid to the bursary holder).

Who can apply
Based on the official application form, applicants should meet the following minimum requirements:
- Be a South African citizen.
- Reside within the Collins Chabane Local Municipality area.
- Come from a household where the parent/guardian is officially declared indigent.
- Be applying to study (or already studying) towards a degree or diploma at a recognised tertiary institution.
- If you are already a tertiary student (senior student), you must have passed the previous year’s studies.
Fields of study
The Municipality notes that the bursary is intended for studies at a recognised tertiary institution. The form also indicates that the Municipality will fund courses that are relevant to Local Government, and that some fields may receive preference in terms of the Municipality’s bursary policy. The application form itself does not list the preferred fields, so if your programme is specialised, it is a good idea to confirm eligibility with the bursary office before you submit.
What the bursary covers
- Funding is paid directly to the tertiary institution (not to the applicant), except that payment for private accommodation may be paid to the bursary holder.
- The official form does not specify a fixed rand value in the sections available publicly, and the Municipality reserves the right not to accept all applicants.
- There is no work-back requirement and no obligation on the Municipality to employ successful applicants.
Selection process
- Applications are submitted to a committee for initial consideration and may be escalated for further assessment.
- Shortlisted candidates may be called for an interview.
- Only successful applicants will be contacted. If you do not receive feedback within four months after the closing date, the form advises you to regard the application as unsuccessful.
Required documents
Incomplete applications (including missing documents) will not be processed. Prepare certified copies and attach the documents listed in the official form, including:
- Completed prescribed application form
- Motivation letter (about 150 words)
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Certified copies of parents’/guardians’ proof of income
- Certified copy of Matric results/certificate (where applicable)
- Certified copy of South African ID document
- Proof of registration/acceptance at a tertiary institution
- Proof of residence within the Collins Chabane municipal area
- If applicable, proof of disability from a registered medical practitioner/clinic/hospital
- Banking details of the tertiary/learning institution on an original bank letterhead (as requested in the form)
Closing date
Applications close on 14 January 2026. Late submissions are not accepted.
