What the bursary is
FoCTO indicates that it is holding a competition at Opera UCT to identify prize winners who will share the bursary for the year. The UCT page also notes a “Music of Note” prize that may be awarded to a singer who is not necessarily one of the finalists but shows promise earlier in their journey.
Who can apply
- Full-time classical voice students at the South African College of Music (UCT)
- At least in their 3rd year of study (or above)
Repertoire and competition format
Entrants are asked to prepare three operatic arias. The preliminary round will normally hear two arias, with the first aria chosen by the singer and the second selected by the panel from the remaining two. Finalists perform two operatic arias in the final round. Your repertoire needs approval from your vocal teacher, and music must be memorised for both rounds.
Closing date
Complete the online entry form before Tuesday 10 March 2026. The UCT page notes that the entry form may not always be open to submissions immediately — if you see a “not yet opened” message, check back regularly as the deadline approaches.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Submitting after the deadline — the entry form must be completed before 10 March 2026.
- Choosing repertoire without your teacher’s approval.
- Not preparing all three arias (the panel may choose from your remaining two).
- Leaving admin to the last day (uploading/entry issues can happen).
How to apply
Apply by completing the online entry form on the official UCT FoCTO Bursary Competition page. The form must be filled in fully and requires approval from your voice teacher (as noted on the page).
