What is a Bursary?

What is a Bursary

A Bursary is an award in the form of money and it is granted to students who are not capable to pay for their study. A bursary comes often in the form of a loan. Companies pay for your registration fees and tuition, but you have to “pay” them back by working for that company for the number of years you received the bursary. This will vary from company to company to Institution.

This is also the reason why bursaries are rewarded to high achievers. Companies invest in your future but also in their own future as employment is often guaranteed.

Some bursaries will be full bursaries while others will only be partial bursaries. Students will sign a bursary contract with the bursary provider where clearly is stated what is expected from the student and what the student can expect from the bursary provider.

How To Apply For a Bursary?

Create stylish call-to-action buttons with Qubely Buttons. Play around with typography, design, border and more. Add animations and personalize it to engage

How to apply for a bursary will be greatly dependent on the company offering it. In the last few years we saw an increase in online applications where you go to a secured online area to fill on all your personal information and where you can upload your certified documents.

But not all institutions are that well connected to the Internet. With some companies/institutions you will need to send forms by post or bring it to their office.

Luckily things are changing for the better in South Africa and finding bursaries and applying for them has become easier. We are moving to an online world and websites like Leaf.ly and organizations like Study Trust have made applying for a bursary much easier.

Which Companies offer Bursaries in South Africa?

There are a few hundred companies offering Bursaries in South Africa. This website has already listed more than 300 Bursaries and we are looking and finding new bursaries every week.

Companies that offer bursaries are often the companies who have a big impact in South Africa like SASOL or ESKOM. There are also very popular bursaries offered by our Government like the Funza Lushaka bursary.

We can’t list all companies in this small box, but take a look around this website and maybe you find what you are looking for.

Who Qualifies for a Bursary in South Africa?

This is also dependent on the bursary which is offered. What most bursaries have in common is that bursary providers are looking for motivated and ambitious students. These companies want to invest in the future of South Africa, so competition is fierce. High achievers are wanted and low achievers are left behind

Some companies offer bursaries to people from certain demographics or minority groups. There are also companies offering bursaries to students who are disabled. And some companies offer bursaries specially for women.

So who qualifies for a bursary in South Africa? South African citizens who passed their Matric or are on their way to pass matric. South Africans who show ambition and want to be the showcase of the future of South Africa

How Do You Get a Bursary?

The only way to get a bursary is to do a search on this website and see which bursaries fit with your study subjects. After that you have to check if you are allowed to apply for that bursary. Do you have the right subjects in your Matric? Do you have the right grades?

When you are eligible you need to apply for that bursary. You either do that online or offline by post or by bringing forms to an office.

If the company likes your profile and letter, you will be invited by a bursary committee. This is a group of people who will ask you all kinds of questions to make sure you are motivated and a good fit for their company. If you show dedication to the bursary provider this often ends in employment

Read the small letters in every bursary description. Every application is different and the biggest chance on success is to make every application personal.

How Does a Bursary Work?

I will try to explain this in a very simplistic way. But again, this can be different for every bursary.

  1. You apply for a bursary you like
  2. If they like you, they invite you for an interview
  3. If they like you more, you will both sign a Bursary contract
  4. Some bursaries require you to apply every year
  5. After you completed your study, you will often need to “repay” the bursary in the form of employment
