The SAAFoST Foundation offers the Koeppen Memorial Scholarships for postgraduate students in Food Science and Food Technology for the 2026 academic year. Two scholarships are made available: one for a Master’s programme and one for a Doctorate programme, each valued at R35 000 per annum towards tuition fees.

Who is offering this scholarship?
SAAFoST is the South African association for food scientists, technologists and other professionals serving the food and allied industries. Through the SAAFoST Foundation, the organisation supports educational development in Food Science and Food Technology.
Eligibility (high level)
- Be a SAAFoST member for at least one consecutive year before applying.
- Be registered for the relevant postgraduate programme for at least one year before nomination.
- Be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
- Be nominated by the relevant Department Head at one of the eligible departments/institutions listed on the SAAFoST page.
- Include a project proposal for the research being undertaken and an approved progress report (where applicable).
What it covers
- R35 000 per annum (per scholarship) towards tuition fees.
- If tuition is already covered by other support, the scholarship may be applied (with prior written approval) to educational purposes such as academic conferences, study materials, study visits and research-related costs.
Closing date
27 February 2026 (submit nominations by email to the SAAFoST Membership Development Officer). The SAAFoST page also notes an earlier internal “reach by” date for nominations — submit as early as possible to avoid missing cut-offs.
