SKA Bursary 2020-2021 SARAO Scholarships And Postdoctoral Fellowships

The SKA Bursary consists of several Postdoctoral fellowships funded by SARAO. SARAO is the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory and the SKA project is building the largest radio telescope in the world. SKA stands for Square Kilometre Array as that is the size of the area they want to build the telescopes.

It is interesting to know that SARAO has several positions available from a Postdoctoral Fellowship to Bachelor of engineering Scholarships. Let’s dig in what SARAO SKA Bursaries and Postdoctoral Fellowships are available for funding.

SARAO Scholarships for Bachelor of Engineering and Technology

When do applications open? 1 April 2020

When do applications close? 14 August 2020

You can apply for this SKA bursary/scholarship:

  • If you are a permanent resident of South Africa
  • If you are studying or wish to study the following study fields: (1)Bachelor in Engineering Technology Electronics, or (2) Bachelor in Engineering Technology Mechanical.
  • A minimum Grade 12 score of 70% in Physical Science and Mathematics, or a minimum average for your Bachelor of 60%

The duration of your scholarship depends if you are a first-year student or a 2nd or 3th-year student. First-year students may receive 3 years of scholarship and 3th-year students 1 year of scholarship.

SARAO Scholarships for Diploma in Engineering and Technology

When do applications open? 1 April 2020

When do applications close? 14 August 2020

If you want to apply for this specific scholarship you need to satisfy the following requirements:

  • If you are a permanent resident of South Africa
  • You are studying or will study in the direction of (1) Diploma in Engineering Technology Electronics, or (2) Diploma in Engineering Technology Mechanical.
  • You will also need a minimum of 60% for both Physical Science and Mathematics in Grade 12, or an average minimum of 60% for your Diploma Engineering Technology subjects.

The value of this scholarship is set at R 117 500 but this may be adjusted by inflation and University fees.

SARAO Undergraduate Scholarships

Applications for the SARAO Undergraduate Scholarships open at 1 April 2020. The closing date is internally determined at the university you are studying. Follow the link if you want the complete guide for their application process. Here are listed the most important items.

Who can apply for this scholarship?

You need to satisfy the following requirements to apply.

  • Permanent citizen of SA and minimum grades for your Grade 12: 70% in Physical Science and Mathematics, or 60% average for your Undergraduate level

You are currently studying or planning to study in the following fields:

  • BSc Electric Engineering
  • BSc Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • BSc Mechanical Engineering
  • BSc Mechatronic Engineering
  • BSc Computer Engineering
  • BSc of Science in Mathematics, applied mathematics and Physics
  • BSc of Science in Physics and Electronics
  • BSc of Science in Astronomy / Physics and Astrophysics
  • BSc Computer Science with another major in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics

Currently this Scholarship covers R148 000 per year but it is under change of inflation and registration fees. The duration of the scholarship is between 1-4 years, being 1 year for 4th year students and 4 years for first year students

SARAO Honours Scholarships

The application will open at 1 April 2020. The closing date will be decided internally at your University.

Who Can Apply?

You will need to be a SA citizen and permanently live in South Africa. You will a minimum average of 65% for your Undergraduate level.

You need to be studying in the following study fields:

  • BSC of Science: Honours in Electronics and Physics / Computer Science / Astronomy / Astrophysics
  • BSC of Science: Honours at NASSP (National Astrophysics and Space Science Programme)

The duration of this scholarship is 1 year and the valuation is set at R 148 000 a year. This can be adjusted under influence of inflation and change of registration fees.

SARAO Masters Scholarships

The applications open at 1 April 2020. The closing date is again internally decided at your University.

SARAO will consider applications if they satisfy the following requirements:

  • Citizens from South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Zambia, Namibia and Botswana who want to complete a relevant master’s degree at a SA University may apply.
  • You should have excellent Academic results and your Undergraduate/Honours degree should be in the direction of a topic which is relevant for SARAO
  • You have selected a SARAO approved subject from the list of approved postgraduate subjects for 2021
  • You need approval from the supervisor of that project that he agrees to supervise the student.

SARAO Doctoral Scholarships

This doctoral scholarship opens 1 April 2020 and the closing date will be internally decided by your University.

SARAO has the following requirements:

  • Citizens from South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Zambia, Namibia, and Botswana who want to complete a relevant Doctoral degree at a South African University may apply.
  • Your Academic results should be excellent and you have completed, or are busy completing your masters degree with a topic that is relevantly interesting to SARAO
  • You have chosen a topic from the list of approved doctoral research projects. And you have found agreement with the supervisor of that project to supervise you
