The Weir Minerals Africa Bursary is aimed at employment equity candidates studying certain engineering degrees that are applicable to Weir.
The bursary has been developed to assist financially needy South African citizens, while simultaneously providing them with a clear path to employment, post-graduation. Prospective applicants are those studying a Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Metallurgical Engineering.
The Weir Minerals Africa Bursary Programme is valid at any recognized Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) tertiary institution in South Africa.
Prospective applicants are those boasting an academic history of at least 60%. The Weir Minerals Africa Bursary aims to financially support students who are hardworking, adaptable, flexible, while boasting the ability to excel under pressure.
Weir is a multinational engineering company that was founded in 1871. Weir initially specialized in the creation of boilers, pumps, and shipping auxiliary equipment, revolutionizing the market at the time.
The company’s head office is based in Glasgow, Scotland, with various other offices based all over Africa, Europe, Asia, America, and Australasia. Weir currently specializes in commodities, aggregation, oil, and gas.
Closing Date of the Bursary
Please note that bursary applications for the Weir Minerals Africa Bursary Programme will close on the 20 of September 2021. Applications received after the closing date will not be considered for the bursary programme.
Applicants who have not received a response within three weeks of the closing date should consider their application to be unsuccessful.
About the Bursary
The Weir Minerals Bursary Programme is aimed at employment equity candidates who are South African citizens. These candidates should be in their FIRST year of study. The bursary programme will cover the tuition fees, study material fees, and the accommodation of the successful applicants.
The bursary is valid for a period not exceeding 1 year, subject to renewal. Applicants who achieve an average of at least 60% in their first year of their undergraduate degree may expect bursary renewal.
Requirements and Eligibility
Prospective applicants need to satisfy all of the requirements of the Weir Minerals Africa Bursary in order to be considered for the Programme:
- Applications are open to South African citizens ONLY.
- Applications are open to those who have successfully obtained their National Senior Certificate (NSC).
- Applications are open to those in their first year at University ONLY.
- Applications are open to those studying at a tertiary institution that has been recognised by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).
- Applications are open to those with an academic record of at least 60%.
- Applications are open to those who can effectively use Microsoft Office.

The Weir Minerals Africa Bursary Programme will provide successful applicants with financial assistance which will pay for the costs of the applicable degree.
The bursary will cover the costs of the:
- Full tuition fees of the successful applicant.
- Study material of the successful applicant.
- Accommodation fees of the successful applicant.
Successful applicants will be provided with a monthly allowance that can be used to cover student leisure activities.
Please note that successful applicants will also be enrolled into 6-8 weeks of vacation work once a year.
Upon competition of the degree, bursary beneficiaries will be required to work for Weir.
