The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) in partnership with the National Research Foundation (NRF) invites new applications for Honours Student Funding for the 2026 academic year.
This scholarship aims to support high-achieving South African citizens and permanent residents pursuing Honours studies in key academic fields to strengthen the national research and innovation system.
The Bursary Sponsor
The NRF is South Africa’s premier research-funding agency under the DSTI. It invests in human capital development to advance science, engineering, technology, and innovation through postgraduate support, research grants, and academic partnerships across the country.
What Is This Bursary Program?
The DSTI-NRF Honours Scholarship provides financial support to students enrolled for Honours-level qualifications at recognised South African universities.
Two levels of funding are available:
- Full Cost of Study (FCS): for financially needy students (combined household income ≤ R350 000 per year), students living with disabilities, or exceptional academic achievers.
- Partial Cost of Study (PCS): for students who meet minimum academic requirements but do not qualify for FCS.
The scholarship supports studies across:
- Science
- Engineering and Technology
- Social Sciences
- Humanities
Who Can Apply
Applicants must:
- Be South African citizens or Permanent Residents.
- Have obtained a minimum average of 65 % for major subjects in their final undergraduate year.
- Be accepted or intend to register for an Honours programme at a recognised South African institution in 2026.
- Meet additional requirements outlined in the NRF Application and Funding Guide and Postgraduate Framework.
