AGSA Bursary 2023-2024

Calling all chartered accountants! AGSA is looking for hard-working students with a passion for numbers to apply for its bursary program.

This is a great opportunity for students who want to further their studies but lack the finances to do so.

The best part is that after your studies AGSA will give you the opportunity to enroll in its training program to further help you on your accounting journey.

Closing Date

The AGSA Bursary application period will end on 30 September 2022.

Please make sure to submit your application and any other supporting materials by this date.

Your application won’t be taken into account by the bursary provider if you don’t do this.

What Is This Bursary About?

In 1911, more than a century ago, the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) was founded.

The AGSA is South Africa’s top auditing organization, and it has the duty to examine and document how the country’s government spends the tax money it receives from its citizens.

The following organizations are partners with AGSA: Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA), Association of Chartered Accountants (ACCA), South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), South African Institute of Government Auditors (SAIGA), and International Organization of Supreme Audit Institution (INTOSAI).

The AGSA is committed to advancing B-BBEE (Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment) rules of good conduct and South Africa’s transformational goals.

For the academic year 2023, AGSA is inviting students to apply for their bursary program.

Who Can Apply

The following fields of study will be eligible for bursaries:

  • BCom Accounting CA stream
  • Bachelor of Accounting CA stream
  • BCompt

Before applying, candidates must meet the minimum entry requirements listed below (please note that if you do not meet all of the requirements, your application will not be considered):

  • You must be a resident of South Africa.
  • You must be enrolled in or have already completed high school.
  • You must be pursuing one of the aforementioned Chartered Accountancy credentials full-time or have plans to do so.
  • A university that has been accredited by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants is where you must be enrolled or where you intend to enroll (SAICA)
  • Matric: you need to enter university with a Matric exemption.
  • Matric: you must obtain a minimum grade in mathematics of 60%. (NOT Mathematical Literacy)
  • Matric: You must be beginning your first year of study in 2023 for one of the aforementioned Chartered Accountancy credentials.
  • First-year students must receive a minimum score of 60% in Financial Accounting and 60% in Mathematics (NOT Mathematical Literacy) and English in their matriculation exams.
  • First-year students must be pursuing one of the Chartered Accountancy credentials mentioned above.
  • First-year students must begin their second year of study in 2023.
  • Second-year students must have a minimum score of 60% in financial accounting.
  • Second-year students of management accounting, you must have a minimum grade of 60%
  • Second-year students must be pursuing one of the Chartered Accountancy credentials indicated above and in 2023, you must be beginning your third year of studies.
  • Final-year students must receive a minimum grade of 55% on all of their qualification’s main modules.
  • Final-year students must be pursuing one of the aforementioned Chartered Accountancy credentials.
  • Final-year students must begin their postgraduate studies in 2023.
  • Final-year students must have been accepted into the CTA program.
  • You must be an effective communicator.
  • You must possess exceptional interpersonal abilities.
  • You must have the capacity for powerful leadership.
  • To succeed, you must be tenacious, motivated, and dedicated.

What Does This Bursary Cover?

The following costs will be covered by the bursary: university tuition, required textbooks, food, and lodging.

Recipients of bursaries will be required to complete training with AGSA or serve articles after graduation.

With your online bursary application, submit clear copies of the following supporting documents (submitting these documents is required; if any are missing, your application may be rejected):

Matric students:

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Final grade 11 results (certified copy)
  • Mid-year results for matric (certified copy)
  • Letter of acceptance to university (on institutions letterhead)

First-year Students:

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Matriculation Certificate (certified copy)
  • Complete academic history (on institutions letterhead)

Second-year Students:

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Complete academic history (on institutions letterhead)

Final-year Students:

  • CTA program acceptance letter
  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Complete academic history (on institutions letterhead)

Note that documents should be in pdf format and not exceed 2MB in size.

Please send your most current highest completed academic scores if any of the required supporting documents are not readily available.
